Scenarios

Scenario 1

I want to shuffle and rearrange the course sections in the course.

Scenario 2

Is there an easy way to insert a week? For example, Februrary 10-16 is reading break and nothing should be assigned there.

Solutions

Solution 1

You can rearrange the order of the sections in your course.

  • In your Moodle course > 'Turn editing on' Turn Editing On.png (top-right corner)
  • Use the multi-direction arrows in each section to rearrange the sections

Move section.png

NOTE: If you don't see the multi-direction arrow your course is probably in Weekly format. See instructions below.

Solution 2

Yes. What you need to do is move an empty week from the bottom/end of your course up into the appropriate date/position. Moodle won’t let you move a Week section (I guess you’re not supposed to rearrange calendar dates arbitrarily), but it will let you move a Topic section. We’re going to pull a little switcheroo on Moodle to make this process work.

If you don’t have an empty week section

Here’s how to add one:

  • In your Moodle course > Gear icon > Edit settings
  • In the 'Edit Course settings' page > Course format > Number of sections: (use the drop-down menu to add another section to your course)

If your course is in Weekly format

  • In your Moodle course > Gear icon > Edit settings
  • In the 'Edit Course settings' page > Course format > Format: Topics format (This is the beginning of the switcheroo. Don’t worry – you won’t lose any content.)
  • Save changes

To move the new section to the appropriate location

  • In your Moodle course > 'Turn editing on' Turn Editing On.png (top-right corner)
  • You should now see a multi-direction arrow to the left of each Topic section. Scroll to the bottom of your page and use drag-and-drop to move the empty section up the page to the appropriate location.
Drag-and-drop: click and hold down the left button on the multi-direction arrow and drag it upward. Release the button when the section is at the location you want.
In my experience, when dragging from the very bottom of the page you will only be able to drag the new section up to the top of the window. You might have to drag-and-drop to the top of the window, adjust the scrollbar so that the new section is now at the bottom of the window, and drag-and-drop again. Once you get about half-way up the page, dragging to the top of the window should cause the scrollbar to move up automatically.
Oh, and sometimes the headings get a little confused. Just pause for a moment to let the drag-and-drop catch up, and then refresh/reload the page.

Reset your course back to Weekly (as appropriate)

  • In your Moodle course > Gear icon > Edit settings
  • In the 'Edit Course settings' page > Course format > Format: Weekly format (This is the beginning of the switcheroo. Don’t worry – you won’t lose any content.)
  • Save changes

(This is the end of the switcheroo.)
